What About Water?

While 70% of Earth is covered with water, less than one percent is fresh and useable.  No more water is being made – we essentially reuse what exists through the Water Cycle, a solar-powered engine that evaporates, transports, and deposits water around the world.

Our bodies contain roughly 70% water, and we can’t live long without an adequate and clean supply.  Blood becomes dangerously thick if we are without water for 4 to 7 days, making us delirious and unable to function, with death not far behind.  Contaminated water is the bane of good health, with biological pathogens, natural impurities, and a growing list of man-made chemicals requiring complex treatment to ensure safe supplies.

Fortunately for us, we are gifted with an industry of talented and trained professionals committed to providing a high level of public water service.  They are so good at what they do, and safe, clean water is so affordable, that most of us simply take clean water for granted.  This is a lost opportunity.

In New Hampshire, public water is a very local affair, and your involvement is a great way to enhance your personal wellbeing and connect with your community in meaningful ways.  Consider the following to become an active part of the water cycle in your town:

  • Contact your Water Department about a tour to learn how water is delivered to you.
  • Research and support local land use rules to protect your water source; effective source protection is the best way to secure and treat your supply.
  • Learn about and support rates that ensure your expected level of service. Proactively manage both system investments and addressing staffing needs.
  • Consider a Great Career for Great People in the drinking water industry!

Win with Water! is an informational series to raise awareness and provide actionable steps to public water system managers, administrators, and policy makers.
