Asset Management for Water – Be a Winner!
The public drinking water system is one a town’s most valuable assets, yet most of us know little to nothing about its extent and value, or what it takes to reliably deliver safe, clean, and affordable water. “Asset management” is a system that inventories and tracks the condition of your asset, and Asset Management Plans (AMPs) provide objective and logical information for budgeting, maintenance, and capital investment planning. A few more key points:
- AMPs are often required to apply for system improvement funds, as NHDES needs to know that water system owners and operators are focused on proper investment priorities and can manage what they already have.
- NHDES currently has an effective AMP support section, with up to $100,000 in grant funding available to develop an AMP. Applications are due Fall 2022, with this and more information about NHDES funding resources here.
- AMPs make good sense, as they help you manage your town’s most important infrastructure, communicate its value and cost to your fellow citizens, and open the door to sustainable and resilient water infrastructure investments.
NHDES is offering a free AMP training on June 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Register here and contact NHDES’ Luis Adorno at 603-271-2472 or Luis.adorno@des.nh.gov if you have any questions about planning, funding, and implementing an AMP. You will be glad you did, and your friends and colleagues will thank you!
Win with Water! is an informational series to raise awareness and provide actionable steps to public water system managers, administrators, and policy makers.
