Utilities Maintenance Technician I – Town of Peterborough

The Town of Peterborough Public Works Department is accepting applications for the position of Utilities Maintenance Technician I to assist with the operation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of the Town’s water and wastewater systems.

Position Details

  • Classification: Regular, Full-Time, Non-Exempt
  • Pay Grade: Union – Grade 2 ($21.80-$32.70)
  • Reports To: Utilities Superintendent
  • Work Schedule: Normally 40 hours per week. Work hours may include nights, weekends, overtime, and rotating on-call assignments, consistent with operational needs.

Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Utilities Superintendent, this position performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties related to municipal water and wastewater systems. The position includes participation in winter operations, a rotating on-call schedule, and emergency response outside of normal working hours.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 90 days, NH DES Grade I Water Treatment and Distribution and Wastewater Certification
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within a reasonable time, a CDL Class B with tanker endorsement
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to participate in a rotating on-call schedule (approximately seven days every four to five weeks)

Performs professional work of an administrative and technical nature, in directing the operation and maintenance of the Water Treatment Plant, pumping stations, distribution system, and related facilities.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages operations and maintenance of the water treatment plant, pumping stations, and storage tanks to ensure that water quality meets and exceeds the federal and state safe drinking water act regulations; establishes treatment goals and practices; develops plans for monitoring programs and preparing reports for local and state agencies. Oversight of support in the management of the water distribution system.
  • Serves as the Primary Operator and point of contact for the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with city policies, procedures, and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, training, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints, resolving problems, and planning, assigning, and directing work.
  • Develops and manages operating budget for the Water Treatment operations annually; monitors and administers approved budget; manages the purchasing and inventory control of parts, equipment, and supplies.
  • Manages capital improvement projects, including planning and implementing short- and long-term projects; coordinates activities with consultants and contractors; researches, applies for, and administers state and federal grants.
  • Prepares water use reports; monitors dam safety; controls and disposes plant residuals and computers.
  • Provides assistance to water distribution operators to ensure water quality throughout the distribution system.
  • Oversees the maintenance of records.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Microbiology, or other related field; and,

Additional or included course work in water treatment procedures and techniques; and, Five years of progressively responsible experience in water treatment, pumping station operations and maintenance, distribution system operation and management; and, five year of experience in a supervisory capacity; or,

Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid New Hampshire Driver’s License.
  • Current State of New Hampshire Water Works Operator, Treatment Grade IV and Distribution Grade III license, or ability to acquire within 6 months of hire.

Water Treatment Plant Operator I – City of Portsmouth

This role is essential to the safe and efficient operation of the water treatment facilities. The candidate will be capable of working both independently and collaboratively, ensuring compliance with performance standards and regulatory requirements. The primary objective of this position is to proficiently operate, maintain, and repair water treatment facilities. This position works independently and collaboratively in adherence to approved performance and regulatory guidelines. This multifaceted role encompasses a broad spectrum of responsibilities, including but not limited to the implementation of water treatment process control techniques, the maintenance and sanitation of treatment facilities, wells, pumping stations, and equipment, as well as water storage tank management. Additionally, this position carries the responsibility of performing proactive/preventative equipment maintenance, conducting sampling procedures, maintaining water treatment analyzers, undertaking laboratory work, making mechanical improvements, and completing any other relevant tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:
Applicants for this position must have graduated from high school or earned a graduate equivalent diploma (GED). Other advanced training in water treatment facility operations, pumps, motors or other skilled trade is preferred.

An applicant must have three (3) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment, or the operation and maintenance of a water system, and/or one (1) year of formal training in water treatment, or equivalent work experience.

Water Operator Certification must be obtained according to the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services rules for “Minimum Education and Experience Requirements for Operators,” (Env-Dw 502.18) at the level of Grade I Treatment within 18 months of the date of original appointment and the level of Grade II Treatment within 36 months of the date of original appointment.

An incumbent must possess a valid driver’s license and have no offenses which would prohibit or restrict insurability by any insurance carrier providing coverage to the City.  Obtaining additional certification or licensing may be required.

Water Treatment Operator – Acton Water District, Acton, MA

The Acton Water District is seeking an organized, energetic, self-motivated individual with strong mechanical aptitude and communication skills to be part of our team. Under the general supervision of the Foreman, the Operator will assist in the operation of two membrane filtration plants treating groundwater under the direct influence of surface water (GWUDI), a greensand filtration plant treating water from both gravel-packed and bedrock wells, multiple pumping stations, and the distribution/storage system. Granular activated carbon (GAC) treatment is currently at, or being installed at, all four treatment facilities. The position requires a minimum of D2 and T2 water operator licenses, with preference given to candidates with a T3 water treatment operator license and 2A hoisting license. While the emphasis is on treatment, this position is expected to perform distribution-related duties on a routine and ongoing basis as well. This is a full-time position, requiring some overtime and emergency response, with the expectation to go on scheduled rotating call after a probationary period. Excellent benefits and hourly rate (starting at $37 for candidates with a T3 license) will be dependent on qualifications. Program Specialist – Lead in Drinking Water – RCAP Solutions

This is an exempt position with a salary range of $73,000 to $81,000.

Please note that while the position is based in New Hampshire, we are considering candidates residing in bordering states.

The Program Specialist- Lead in Drinking Water will support the implementation of the EPA WIIN Lead Reduction Grant in New Hampshire (will consider candidates in bordering states). This role focuses on reducing lead exposure in drinking water at schools and childcare facilities through technical assistance, education, outreach, and coordination with stakeholders. The Program Specialist will work closely with RCAP Solutions staff, state agencies, and local communities to ensure successful project delivery and compliance with grant requirements. This position may also contribute to the organization’s efforts to provide services under the EPA Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Water Act, and Training and Technical Assistance Program for small public water and waste systems and private wells to achieve and maintain compliance with federal and local regulations and improve water quality. The Program Specialist will work with a variety of school and childcare facility staff and administrators, board members, contractors, and community members.
